POV: Groom Your Successor Before You Need One

My husband said something interesting the other day…
It’s getting harder to hire a “ready-made” successor straight from the market.

And he’s right.

The reality is, successors are rarely found.
They’re grown.
Identified early. Coached patiently. And given space to fail and learn safely.

Sure, grooming a successor can feel like a long and frustrating process.
Because it means teaching, letting go, and sometimes watching someone else shine in the space you once owned (which, btw, is the best sign your hard work paid off!).

So maybe the question isn’t, “Who can replace me?”
It’s “Who am I preparing to replace me?

Don’t just find good talent.
Build one too.

Sustainable leadership is never easy.

And remember, great leaders don’t fear being replaced.
They take pride in leaving someone stronger behind.
