I have been in the recruitment business for a long time & I’ve seen a lot of careers transitioned over the years. Subordinates, peers, superiors, clients, friends, mine. This is what I had observed:
1. If you are a recruiter in an agency, the job is more sales than HR for it’s a target-oriented, number driven role.
2. With reference to (1), I do see recruitment consultants with good sales background struggle lesser & more likely to be successful.
3, If you are an in-house recruiter, to a certain degree you need to love admin work for a lot of times you will be pushing paper.
4. Consultants with no technical background can be successful in recruiting technical roles.
5, Just like how consultants with technical background can be successful in HR roles.
6. Among all the successful engineers I know in the business, somehow the majority of them are chemical engineers. Hmmm…
Recruitment is not rocket science, yes. But it’s also not as easy as people think it is either. We are talking about people’s rice bowl here. So on top of TLC, it requires precision too. Actually, it’s just like any other jobs if we want to be successful.
The details matters. The effort matters. The sincerity matters.
