Disappointment rarely comes from bad intentions.
From my experience, it comes from unmanaged expectations.
So here’s what I’ve been practicing for years to avoid disappointment.
☝️ Start with what the company actually needs
As HODs, we need to be clear on what success looks like for the business this year.
Revenue? Retention? Growth? Compliance? What exactly are we aiming for?
✌️ Translate expectations into SMART goals
Specific. Measurable. Attainable. Relevant. Time-bound.
One very important step that bosses often miss:
Agree on the source of measurement.
What data are we using? Which report? Which system?
If both parties are not aligned on how success is measured, the goal is already broken.
👌 Lock in a mid-point check-in
Put a calendar reminder 3 or 6 months ahead.
This is to correct-course before it’s too late.
Let me repeat this again:
1. Manage expectations early.
2. Measure fairly.
3. Review before it’s too late.
Tbh, this takes time.
But it takes far less time than managing disappointments and performance issues later.
Do it. Please. It’s just as simple as 1, 2, 3. 😉
