AuntyHR here, the self-proclaimed Rakyat’s HR Helpdesk.
I’ve received many messages about this, so I decided to put up a proper post, especially for those based in Johor.
Ideally, the date for Hari Raya Aidilfitri is officially declared only after the sighting of the new moon of Syawal.
For the purpose of this post, we will assume that the predicted dates on the national calendars are accurate, as the likelihood of moon sighting is high.
Based on this assumption, Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2026 falls on 21 and 22 March 2026 (Saturday and Sunday).
Coincidentally, for the state of Johor, Hari Keputeraan Sultan Johor (Official Birthday) falls on 23 March 2026 (Monday).
This post further assumes the following:
1️⃣ The company recognises Hari Raya Aidilfitri Day 1 and Day 2 as gazetted public holidays.
(FYI, both days are not compulsory public holidays)
2️⃣ Sunday is a Rest Day
(i.e. 7th day of the work week, which may vary depending on state, role, or industry)
Again, here are the relevant labour law provisions 🇲🇾:
• Employment Act 1955 Section 60(D)(1)(b)
• Sabah Labor Ordinance Section 103(1)(b)
• Sarawak Labour Ordinance Section 104(1)(b)
All three provisions state the same principle:
If a public holiday falls on a Rest Day or another public holiday, the working day immediately following shall be a paid holiday in replacement of the first-mentioned public holiday.
So, for employees who work Monday to Friday/Saturday, this is how your Raya work week will look like:
🗓️ 21 Mar 2026 (Sat): Hari Raya Aidilfitri Day 1
• Since this is not a Rest Day, (6th day), no replacement is required.
🗓️ 22 Mar 2026 (Sun): Hari Raya Aidilfitri Day 2
• This falls on a Rest Day, therefore the Rest Day takes precedence.
• The public holiday must be replaced on the next available working day.
🗓️ 23 Mar 2026 (Mon): Hari Keputeraan Sultan Johor
• Public holiday as usual for Johor
• Replacement holiday for Hari Raya Aidilfitri Day 2 for non-Johor states (next available working day).
🗓️ 24 Mar 2026 (Tue)
• Employees not based in Johor return to work.
• For Johor-based employees, this will be the replacement holiday for Hari Raya Aidilfitri Day 2, as it is the next available working day.
🗓️ 25 Mar 2026 (Wed)
• Johor employees return to work.
I know many of us have already started planning festive leave, and honestly, I’m happy to see that.
Planning ahead always beat last-minute panic.
Happy weekend, everybody! Selamat merancang cuti, selamat pulang ke kampung, and may this Aidilfitri be gentle on our hearts, our schedules, and our workplaces.
Kosong-kosong.
