On 8 January 2025, Singapore passed the Workforce Fairness Act (WFA), a significant step in making fair employment practices legally enforceable.
The Act protects workers across the employment lifecycle against discrimination based on 11 protected characteristics:
- Age
- Nationality
- Sex
- Marital status
- Pregnancy
- Caregiving responsibilities
- Race
- Religion
- Language ability
- Disability
- Mental health condition
Of course, there are always exceptions.
The Act sensibly recognises practical realities by allowing narrow exceptions where certain characteristics are genuinely required for the job, safety, legal compliance etc.
Congratulations to Singapore on this milestone. 👏🏻
Hopefully, in time, Malaysia will also move towards clearer, stronger legislative protection for workplace fairness, so expectations are consistent for both employers and employees.
