I posted a video sharing with my audience that I know SMEs who pay mileage claims of RM1.00 per km.
There was an outcry in the comments section, “MANA ADA AUNTYYYYYY!!! MINE STILL 30 SEN ONLY!!”
I was like… RM0.30/km?? That for motorbike isittt??
Unfortunately, it was not.
So today, I wanna be a Tim Tiah for a while.
Step 1: Fix Our Assumptions
We’ll use a Nissan Almera as the reference car.
(Reasonable, middle-class commuter setup)
• Monthly installment: More or less RM900 per month
• Fuel efficiency: 18.4km/litre (according to ChatGPT)
• RON95 (unsubsidised): RM2.52 per litre
• Maintenance, wear & tear: RM2,500 per year (conservative average)
• Insurance & road tax: RM1800+ per year
Step 2: Send information to ChatGPT
… and ask it to tabulate the true cost to run the car.
Result: RM0.85 per km.
So what is a good mileage claim today?
• Conservative (employee absorbs part of ownership cost): RM0.60 to RM0.70 per km
• Fair & defensible rate: RM0.85 per km itself
• Employee-centric (especially for sales & site visits): RM1.00 per km
If RM0.30 per km, honestly, bagus you go by GRAB je.
Parking also no need to claim.
Senang.
BETUL TAKKK?!??!
