Everybody, if you don’t know how to calculate this, please learn. It’s important we understand our own employee rights.
And HR, if you don’t, PLEASE LEARN.
If we follow the law strictly, the formula is:
Completed Months / 12 months in a year x Annual Leave Entitlement per annum
Then we round up or down accordingly.
Let me give you an example.
Today is 21 April 2026.
I want to know how much leave I have earned up to today for year 2026.
Assuming my annual leave entitlement is 15 days per annum:
Since April is not completed yet, we only count 3 completed months (Jan to Mar)
So: 3/12 x 15 = 3.75, round up to 4 days.
That is the minimum way of calculating as prescribed in the Employment Act 1955.
Now…
Some companies (like my previous one), we do it better.
We calculate based on completed days instead of months, and divide by 365 days.
If the results is 0.3 or 0.4 , we round up to 0.5 days.
Using the same example above, it will look like this:
111/365 x 15 days = 4.56, round up to 5 days.
So you see, there is a difference of 1 whole day.
We can do better. Please consider.
