When promoting someone from a junior to a senior position, as a HOD, there are 3 key skills I always look at:
1. Ownership
As a senior, it’s no longer about just completing tasks. You also need to own the outcome of the task.
2. Judgement & Decision Making
As a senior, you’ll most likely have more experience than others. With that experience and skill set, you should have better perspectives. I look at how well you assess situations, weigh risks, and make sound decisions.
3. Influence Without Authority
As a senior, I will assess whether you are able to work across teams with different stakeholders. This includes the ability to mentor juniors and move things forward.
Promotion is a bet on what we’re ready to handle next. If we still need to be told what to do, then perhaps we’re not ready yet.
