Selangor State Holiday – 1st September 2026

Yes, Selangor has declared Tuesday, 1st September 2026 a state holiday or cuti peristiwa, because Selangor became the champion of the 22nd SUKMA Games.

Congratulations, Team Selangor!

And why 1st September? Well, it’s quite obvious the State Government wants us to have a nice long weekend, since 31st August is Merdeka Day.

Now, the big question everybody is asking, “Aunty, does this mean I automatically get a public holiday if I work in Selangor?”

Unfortunately, not necessarily.

Let me explain.

This 1st September holiday is declared under Section 9 of the Holidays Act 1951, which provides for an additional State holiday.

This is different from Section 8, where the Federal Government, often announced through the Prime Minister, declares an additional holiday. That holiday is treated as a mandatory public holiday under Section 60D of the Employment Act, like the additional Raya holiday earlier this year.

But this 1st September holiday is a Section 9 State holiday, and it is not one of the five mandatory public holidays either. So, whether your company has to recognise it depends on how your company provides for public holidays in your employment terms.

Situation number one:
Your company already gives you a specified number or list of public holidays. Before the year started, the company already issued a list of public holidays it will observe. In this situation, this additional State holiday does not necessarily have to be recognised, unfortunately.

Situation number two:
Your employment terms say the company recognises all public holidays, and there was no list released beforehand limiting the number of public holidays. In this situation, your company has to recognise 1st September as a paid public holiday.

Now… if your company recognises 1st September as a public holiday but still needs you to work, then depending on the applicable employment terms, the company may either substitute the public holiday with another day with the employee’s agreement, or eligible employees who work that day shall be compensated accordingly.

Mostly, for employees earning monthly wages of RM4K or less, if you are already earning a monthly basic salary, you will receive an additional two times of your daily wages for working on that public holiday. Contoh.

If the company chooses to substitute the public holiday with another day, then it’s one day for one day, not two days.

And if 1st September happens to be your Rest Day, and your company recognises the holiday, then the public holiday also needs to be replaced on the following day or another day.

Hope this clarifies.
