POV: The Dugaan of Hiring

Hiring is one of the few business decisions where one bad decision can be very chialart.

And the worst thing is, sometimes the terrible hire isn’t even the incompetent one.

It’s the competent asshole – excellent performer, technically brilliant, but slowly poisons everybody around them.

But here’s another uncomfortable truth…. Your “problem employee” was actually your bad hiring decision.

You hired someone who couldn’t do the job, then six months later put them on a PIP.

You ignored the red flags because you desperately needed to fill the vacancy, then spent the next year managing those exact same red flags.

And sometimes, we simply hired the person who interviewed the best. Oh, the sweet talkers! Be careful with them!

From my experience, many excellent employees are actually terrible interviewees.

While some terrible employees interview magnificently but bila sampai masuk kerja – HABIS!

So before interviewing anyone, as hiring managers, know what you are actually hiring for and learn how to be a good interviewer too.

Make sure during the interview, we clearly define what good performance in the role looks like and be clear with our non-negotiables.

And lastly, be realistic. Don’t go looking for unicorn.

You want a candidate with 10 years of working experience with leadership potential, strategic thinking, operational ability, speak three languages, but allocated budget is RM4,500.00.
