That’s the heart of diplomacy, actually, and one of the most underrated skills at work.
How do we communicate the message in our head in a way without being passive-aggressive, while allowing the other person to arrive at the conclusion without us throwing it in their face?
The trick is to make it easy for the other person to agree with you.
Contoh-contoh.
What we want to say: This idea is terrible!
Diplomatic version: “Have we considered the potential downsides?”
What we want to say: I told you so!
Diplomatic version: “This was one of the risks we discussed earlier.”
What we want to say: You clearly didn’t read my email!
Diplomatic version: “Perhaps I can recap what I shared earlier.”
What we want to say: Stop dumping work on me!
Diplomatic version: “Which of my current priorities should I deprioritise for this?”
What we want to say: You are the problem!
Diplomatic version: “I think we may we need to look at what’s causing this pattern.”
What we want to say: Absolutely F not!
Diplomatic version: “I’m afraid I won’t be able to support that.”
Plan the problem on the table and invite everyone else to look at it.
And we pray everyone else can see it too. 💀
