Your salary is not determined by how hard you work. It is largely determined by the value and scarcity of what you can do.
And one of those valuable skills is actually knowing how to build a good relationship with stakeholders, including your boss.
I’ve seen this many times myself, dealing with bosses who give salary increments based on how they feel about their employees.
I know, it’s not fair.
But the reality is that your boss is human, and humans have biases.
That’s why managing your relationship with your boss is just as important as managing your work.
Learn to communicate, build trust, make your contributions visible (so important this) and understand what matters to your boss.
I’m not asking you to become a kaki bodek.
But I’m asking you to recognise that being good at your job and getting recognised for it are two different things.
Remember, it’s not just what you bring to the table but it’s also how well you work with the people sitting around it.
Think about it.
