POV: Loyalty is Dead

An employer have been good to you. During COVD, business was terrible, but they paid your salary on time, didn’t cut pay and took care of you well. That matters and you should remember it.

But does that mean three years later, when a good career opportunity comes along, I’m morally obligated to reject it because “the company took care of me during COVID”?

Relationship has to continue evolving.

The company still needs to continuously provide fair pay, meaningful work and opportunities to grow.

Yesterday’s good will doesn’t permanently compensate for today’s stagnation.

And it applies vice versa.

An employee could have given the company ten fantastic years. I’ve worked weekends, helped during difficult periods and stayed when others left. The company should absolutely appreciate that too.

But when I struggled with performance, the company made the difficult decision too. I was told I’m only as good as my last P&L, doesn’t matter that I’ve been with the company for ten years.

Perhaps loyalty is not dead. But loyalty has an expiry date if neither side continues earning it.

Happy weekend, everybody.

Employees must continue giving employers reasons to keep them. Employers also must continue giving employees reasons to stay.

Like what my ex-colleague like to say, it takes two to tango, loyal or not.
