I am honestly not a supporter of one. I do believe when one decided to leave, should.
However, sometimes when I hear the reason they want to leave is something I can fix, then it’s something worth counter-offering.
Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t work.
But for the times that it had worked, it was almost always not about compensation-related matters. It were the many other things instead.
Career prospect is one of the top. Different people have different career aspirations. So it’s important to understand what it is they need to grow. So they want to stay.
And one very important thing is, for the counter offer to work long-term, whatever we said we will give during the counter offer for the employee to stay, follow through we must.
