Bias – Every boss will have a favourite. So it’s not uncommon the boss will favour one employee over the other. So focus on the outcomes. Because ultimately, you also cannot argue with the results. Especially when it’s crystal clear.
Subjective – To be crystal clear, the best way to is not have any subjectivity that relies on the appraiser’s perceptions of the employee’s performance. Stick to SMART goals. The M is always the most important one.
Inaccuracy – Sometimes even when M is crystal clear, it also may not accurately reflect an employee’s job performance because external factors that is outside the employee’s control such as changes in the market (or government even) influenced the outcomes. Good eg. is HR’s. We are measured on the company’s overall turnover. But most of the time, people leave their bosses, not the company.
Stressful – So undeniably, appraisals can be stressful too. Especially when we are not prepared for ‘constructive’ feedbacks.
But it’s important. So remember this: What does not kill us, will make us stronger. Simple as that.
