Salary negotiations can be nerve-wracking, especially when you’re asked the question, “Why do you think you deserve a higher pay?” It’s a tricky question, which is why it’s important to have a solid answer that demonstrates your value and experience.
Generic answers like “I believe in my strengths” won’t make the cut. Our response needs to be more convincing by being specific to showcase that you are an industry expert. For example…
“I understand that you may be concerned about my salary expectations. However, I would like to emphasize that my expectations are based on the value I can bring to this role. With 20 years of experience in the workforce solutions industry and expertise in managing both operations and HR, I can make significant contributions to the company and bridge the gap between the company and its competitors. My track record of successfully growing key accounts demonstrates my ability to deliver results and add value to the team. So, while my salary expectations may be higher than what you initially had in mind, I am confident that my skills and experience justify it.”
Be confident, but not arrogant. The tone you use to express yourself will make the difference.
Finally, be open to negotiations. While it’s important to have a clear idea of your worth and what you’re looking for, be flexible and open to discussions too. A trick I like to use is negotiate upon confirmation. I understand that I have not proven my worth, but when I deliver, you give it to me. Additional options to negotiate can also be in form of benefits and bonuses.
The key is to show that you’re willing to work towards a mutually beneficial agreement.
