In the realm of career decisions, there are pitfalls that can turn a promising opportunity into a regrettable mistake. One such blunder is resigning from our current job without signing and returning the new offer letter.
An offer letter is more than just a formality. It’s a legally binding document that outlines the terms and conditions of our employment. By signing and RETURNING the offer letter promptly, we confirm our acceptance of the position and solidify the offer.
It’s important that before we sign and return the contract, we take time to carefully review the vital information in the contract, such as salary, benefits, start date and other employment terms. If there is anything we are not happy with, we negotiate BEFORE signing on the dotted line.
Now, until we have return the offer letter, we need to bear in mind that the new employer retains the right to rescind the offer which could leave us in a precarious position. If we need time to think about it (or buy time negotiating other offers), we should not take too long either.
Without a signed and returned offer letter, we expose ourselves to unnecessary risks. Verbal agreements or even WhatsApp offers can be easily misinterpreted and forgotten, leaving us high and dry.
Remember, recruiters are often in a hurry to close the positions, so they may pressure us to resign first in the absence of the offer letter. Do not trust the recruiters blindly. Business is business. Insist on receiving the offer letter, first. Don’t be foolish.
