Back in the days, we used to call our Wednesdays ‘Fun Day’. It was a time when all of us would gather around in the office in the morning and play games to have some fun before starting our day. And one morning, we played this game which was like some version of tug-o-war.
The branch was divided into 2 groups by a line on the floor. Each group has the same number of members. The game involves pulling someone from the other side to your side of the line and whichever side has the higher number of members, win.
After attempting to pull someone over for 3 minutes, I remember my colleague Sri finally managed to pull me over to their side. Then, our manager demonstrated this to us. What if, instead of Sri pulling me over, Sri and I held hands together and agreed to switch sides instead. One side lost me, but gained Sri, and vice versa. Both sides won.
This activity always made me think. While it may seem like a win-win situation, in reality, it is not a true win. Winning means ensuring the other side loses more people than we do. Period.
Sometimes, I do ponder, is winning so important?
Achieving workforce harmony means we need to let go of the constant pursuit rage of winning and instead focus on balance, empathy, and understanding. True harmony is not about overpowering others. It’s about finding common ground, fostering collaboration.
Honestly, it may not always seem fair. But from my experience, the one who is able to take a step back and rise above toward workforce harmony always wins. And we love winning.
