Evaluating Your Future Boss – An Essential Interview Skill

You’ve perfected your answers to common interview questions, updated your CV, and even picked out your outfit. But have you thought about evaluating your potential boss?

Here are some tips to help you figure out if your future boss is a match made in corporate heaven 💘

1. Ask Directly. If the person interviewing you isn’t your direct boss, request a meeting or at least a conversation with them. It’s a valid request to ensure you’ll be stepping into a conducive working relationship.

2. Question the Leadership Style. Find out more about your future boss’s management style. Ask about their expectations from you in the first 3-6 months, how they handle feedback, and their approach to team dynamics. Look for signs of a good communicator who encourages and values their team.

3. Observe and Absorb. Pay attention to their mannerisms, how they treat others in the office and how they answer your questions. You can learn a lot about a person from their non-verbal cues and interactions with others.

4. Check Out Their Digital Footprint. Look them up on LinkedIn or other social media platforms. You might get insights about their career path, their achievements, and possible testimonials from past/current colleagues.

5. Trust your Gut! If something feels off, take note of any red flags and don’t ignore them. Your intuition can often guide you when it comes to interpersonal relationships. If in doubt, seek for clarifications and don’t simply assume.

Remember, an interview is a two-way street. As much as the future boss evaluates your fit, it’s just as crucial for you to assess if the role, the team, and most importantly, the boss align with your career goals and values.
