Today’s hiring managers and recruiters read countless resumes, so they prefer clear, concise information that quickly demonstrates a candidate’s skills and experiences. Meanwhile, many people find it difficult to keep their resumes concise to two pages while also highlighting their experiences and accomplishments.
As the job market evolves, so do the expectations of what to include in a resume. Here are some of the fluff and cliched phrases we can just trim from our resume.
1. “Proficient in Microsoft Office” – Darling, we are no longer in the nineties. Proficiency in basic software like Microsoft Office is generally expected. Unless the job posting specifically asks for it, you might not need to include it.
2. “I am seeking a challenging position” – It’s better to tailor your objectives or professional summary to the specific job you are applying for. What kind of challenges are you seeking? Why is this particular role or company of interest to you? Remember, specificity can make you stand out more.
3. Generic descriptions like “hard-working”, “team player”, or detail-oriented” – While these traits are important, I’ve also never heard a hiring manager who is looking for someone who is lazy, snobbish, and careless. They have been so overused to the point of becoming cliche. Instead, provide concrete examples of how you’ve demonstrated these qualities.
Remember, every space in your resume is precious. It’s important to use it to provide the most impactful and relevant information about your capabilities and experiences.
