Resume Tips – Show, Don’t Tell.

If your resume is just a dry list of duties and responsibilities copied from your job description, it’s time for a change.

Instead of simply listing your responsibilities, illustrate your impact. How have you made a difference?Use quantifiable results to highlight your successeses (more about this here: https://professionalbimbo.com/2023/08/04/counting-our-successes-on-our-resumes/)

Go for the Show, Don’t Tell approach.

Example:

Tell: “Managed recruitment process for HR department.”

This sentence just tells what you did, but it doesn’t give any insight into results you achieved or the impact you had.

Now, Show: “Streamlined the recruitment process, decreasing time-t-fill by 20% and increasing the quality of hires, evidenced by a 15% decrease in new hire turnover within the first year.”

This version illustrates your impact. It explains what you did (streamlined the recruitment process) and the results of your actions (decreased time-to-fill and increased the quality of hires). It brings your accomplishments to life, transforming what you’ve done into clear and compelling narratives.

Now, take a look at your resume and tell us again that you’re a fantastic employee without telling us you’re a fantastic employee 😉
