Salary negotiation plays a pivotal role not only in proving our worth to the company but also about ensuring that our compensation aligns with our efforts and responsibilities.
Here are 3 alternative strategies that I have successfully experimented with in the past:
1. Performance-Based Increase
Negotiate for a performance-based salary increase upon confirmation. Set clear SMART goals and targets with our boss, and if we meet or exceed them, it’s a win-win situation. Our hard work gets recognized, and our salary reflects our accomplishments.
2. Acting Allowance Transformation
Secure an acting allowance when stepping into a role of higher responsibility. Prove our capabilities and dedication, and once our performance is acknowledged, negotiate to have the acting allowance absorbed into our permanent salary. This could also come with an additional increment, further reflecting our expertise and outstanding performance.
3. Embracing the Stretch Allowance
During certain periods, the company might need us to go the extra mile. Perhaps we’re covering for a colleague on maternity or sabbatical leave, and extra effort is required. In such scenarios, negotiating for a stretch allowance temporarily is a fair approach. It ensures we’re compensated for our added workload until the colleague returns.
The key to successful salary negotiation is preparation, communication, and demonstrating the value we bring to the table. Remember, it’s about fostering a arrangement where both us and boss can benefit.
