Landed a new job offer? Exciting times ahead! But before we pop the champagne, remember to review that employment contract and ensure we’re not walking into a trap. Even the fanciest job titles or the most enticing pay packages can come with strings attached. So, make sure we watch out for the SIGNS!
🔎 S for Separation. Examine the termination notice. How much notice is required if either party wants to end the contract? If it’s anything more than 3 months, consider negotiating it down.
🔎 I for Imbalance. A contract that leans heavily in favour of the employer is a red flag! The contract should be fair and beneficial to both parties. For instance, the separation mentioned above. If the company can terminate us with 24 hours notice, but requires us to give 3 months notice when leaving, that’s imbalanced. Such discrepancies are not even align with the Employment Act. So seek clarity, is it 24 hours or 3 months?
🔎 G for Golden Handcuffs. Be cautious of employment bonds. While these are legitimate clauses, if the amount is not more than 1 month of your salary for a one-year bond, it’s still reasonable. Anything more is crazy!
🔎 N for Numbers. Dive deep into compensation details like basic salary, fixed allowances, annual leave entitlement, contractual bonuses, working hours, health insurance, etc. Ensure everything is clearly defined and aligns with what was promised during the interview.
🔎 S for Suspicious Clauses. Scrutinize any clause that feels off. Trust your instincts. If it feels wrong, it probably is! Examples, a clause giving the the right to adjust your salary whenever they deemed necessary, or an overly vague job description, should raise eyebrows.
Ending your employment journey on a bad note due to a sticky contract can be frustrating. So, take your time, understand each clause, and consult with legal experts if needed.
Remember, success isn’t how fast you reach the top, but how firm you stand at every step. Don’t make permanent decisions based on temporary feelings. Your future self will thank you!
