Say It Better: Reframing Common Interview Phrases

In interviews…

Don’t Say: “I’m looking for a better salary.”

Instead Say: “I’m eager to find a role that matches my skills and experience, which I believe can also provide fair compensation.”

Why the Shift? This approach balances the desire for fair pay with an emphasis on finding a role that is also a good fit. It moves the focus away from salary alone and towards a mutually beneficial match between our abilities and the role.

Don’t Say: “I want to learn something new.”

Instead Say: “I’m excited about the opportunity to learn new things and contribute to the company.”

Why the Shift? This change shows your eagerness to learn while also highlighting our willingness to add value to the company. It reframes our objective from solely gaining knowledge to being a beneficial addition to the team.

Don’t Say: “I just need a job.”

Instead Say: “I am seeking a position where I can effectively contribute and be part of a dynamic team.”

Why the Shift? This statement shows that we’re looking for more than just any job – we’re searching for a role where we can make meaningful contributions. It indicates a deeper interest and commitment to the potential position.

Don’t Say: “I want a job that’s less stressful.”

Instead Say: “I’m looking for a role where I can effectively balance high productivity with a healthy work-life balance.”

Why the Shift? This phrase emphasises our ability to manage productivity sustainably, without sacrificing well-being. It conveys that we are capable of handling challenges while maintaining balance, instead of suggesting that we can’t manage stress.

Each alternative phrase is designed to transform potentially negative connotations into positive, constructive elements of our job search and professional aspirations. It’s all about saying it in a way that reflects both our needs and our potential contribution.

Just say it differently.
