After I had spent a significant amount of my time coaching my successor and eventually agreeing to having him leaving me, it is painful indeed.
But it also means my exiting successor is going to leave a void there to be filled up again, creating the exciting opportunity of building another person’s career to fill in that gap.
When I was given the news my Head of Talent Development, who also stands in for me when I am away holidaying, has been earmarked for a regional role, I know there is no way I should be hogging talent & hindering his career growth but to move on. I started looking at my team’s org chart and saw an opportunity to restructure. I must say I’m fortunate that I have a good talents with me, so it was not really a difficult task. I’m also fortunate that my bosses & peers supported my restructuring idea so I could execute the movements to foster the career progression of my team.
So this is what’s happening:
Kumar is leaving me for greener pastures.
So, Latha will be replacing him to lead Talent Development.
Then, Lisa will be replacing Latha to assist her in Talent Development.
Leading to Navreet to replace Lisa in HR & Admin.
Opening up the opportunity to Aishah & Ain to step into Navreet’s shoes.
Aaaahhhh…. don’t you just love this kind of chain reaction that generates such positive impacts. Best is, it paved this new exciting journey for me to build new successors that hopefully could amplify their careers.
And I am looking forward to it, regardless whether they are going to be with me or not in the future.
