The Bottom Number

From my experience, when negotiating salary, it’s best to have a range in mind. Ideally, provide the hiring manager with a specific number you’re targeting. If you wish to indicate flexibility, you can also mention that you are open to negotiation depending on other perks and benefits.

However, it’s always helpful to know your bottom number – meaning, the lowest salary you’ll accept. Normally, this number should not be less than what you are currently earning, because there’s no guarantee that you won’t face similar challenges at the new company. We don’t want to be in a case of “Same crap, different scenery.”

At least aim for a new scene with more money 😉
