POV: The Truth About Our Educational Qualifications in Resumes

In many companies, when hiring fresh graduates, they categorise them into three tiers. SPM holders are considered the lowest tier, followed by Diploma holders, with Degree holders and above as the highest tier.

Therefore, even if you have an MBA or PhD, these advanced degrees do not guarantee a higher pay unless you are in a regulated industry like education or research, where such qualifications are essential.

When it comes to certificates, what really matters is accredited certifications. For example, SHRM certification for HR professionals or CPA for accountants holds significant value.

In contrast, a certificate from a 2-day customer service course does not carry much weight – that’s why I discourage including them in our resumes.

Having said that, in my 20 years of recruitment experience, education is indeed important. While not as critical as our working experience, it does carry weight in our career trajectory. It’s about personal learning and growth, not just a basis for higher compensation.

And that’s why I truly applaud all of you who take the extra effort to pursue further education.
