Many people ask me, “How do I ask for an increment or promotion?”
And my answer is always another question, “Why do you think you deserve it?”
It can’t be because…
- You’re getting paid less than others. This shifts the focus to others instead of your own contributions.
- You’re having personal financial issues. While valid, your finances aren’t the company’s responsibility.
- You’ve been with the company for xx years. Longevity doesn’t always equate to merit.
Instead, try this…
- Focus on presenting the market value of your role.
- Focus on highlighting your value to the company, your contributions, and your future goals.
- Focus on showcasing your specific achievements or growth over the years.
Avoid “why” statements that sound like complaints, comparisons, or threats.
Instead, frame well-reasoned, value-driven “why” arguments that align with the company’s objectives.
