POV: Moonlighting During Ramadhan

During Ramadhan, it’s quite common employees will take the opportunity to moonlight – selling food, clothes, or other items to earn extra income. It’s a great chance to boost earnings, but the question is:

⚠️ Is moonlighting considered misconduct in Malaysia?
(Note: Moonlighting refers to working a second job or running a side business while still being employed full-time.)

There are three factors to consider:

1️⃣ Employment Contract & Company Policy
• Check if your contract explicitly states that employees cannot engage in outside business activities.
• Some companies allow it as long as it does not affect work performance or compete with their business.

2️⃣ Conflict of Interest
• Selling something similar to your employer’s business or using company resources (like client database, time, or equipment) could lead to disciplinary action.
• If your business directly competes with your employer, it’s a big red flag 🚩.

3️⃣ Work Performance
• If your side business starts affecting your job performance (like, coming in late, missing deadlines, or appearing tired at work), your employer may have grounds for disciplinary action.
• Some companies may tolerate it as long as you deliver your KPIs and it doesn’t disrupt your productivity.

One of the oldest tricks in the book is sell to the management team first. 😁 If they buy from you and enjoy it, that means they’re aware of your business And if they don’t take immediate action, well… that’s as close to an unofficial approval as you’re going to get.

So how can we do this right?

👍 Check your contract and employee handbook.
👍 Be transparent – some employers allow it if disclosed.
👍 Keep it professional – don’t use company time, resources, or contacts.
👍 And… if all else fails, get your boss to be your best customer! 😆

Ramadhan is a time of blessings and opportunities, so let’s make sure our side hustle adds value, not trouble!

Selamat berpuasa & berniaga!
