A lot of times when we want to hire, we always judge too quickly. That 30-60 minutes spent to get to know the person might not be enough. Especially for a strategic role. I remember my ex-boss once asked me this question, how would you know this person is good at his job if you don’t talk to someone who has worked with him before?
Yes, of course, second opinions always help. Especially from someone who has the experience. That is why when we buy things today, we also want to read the reviews first before we commit the purchase.
I know this person who once was looking for a business head. He was introduced a candidate from a competitor. But this candidate has an eccentric character. When they had coffee together he couldn’t see beyond it & made the wrong judgement that this fella must be cuckoo. At that point of time he didn’t seek for a second opinion on this candidate and only much later, he found out that this candidate is actually really good at his job and really could had turned around the business for him. Aaaah… the state of “what ifs”.
Mistakes, mistakes, mistakes.
