Doctor called to say come & say your goodbyes.
Reached the hospital gate, the guard said didn’t receive such instructions, hence cannot go into the ward, in an unfriendly tone nonetheless. Guard walkie-talkied nurse. Nurse said not sure, need to check first.
Waited for a good while, then nurse walkie-talkied back. It was so loud every visitor at the gate queueing could hear, “Patient xxxxx is dying. Let him in.”
I honestly think communication skills in this hospital needs improvement. From top to bottom.
Families are anxious at such times. Such stressful moments at the hospital gate was so unnecessary.
This the reason why I always tell the team, 1. Communication with one another is so important; and 2. When communicating with someone who is anxious, with best endeavour calm the person down and be as empathetic as you can.
It could make a whole new difference.
