I remember the first time I had given someone a reference check.
It was for an ex-staff who left me not too long ago.
I was actually quite nervous during my first ref check call. What I was going to say was going to somehow determine whether she was going to get the job or not.
Also because I thought this ex-staff’s performance was quite the mediocre. So if the caller asked if she was a fantastic performer, I did not have plans to lie.
Anyhow, they did not ask me that. But they did asked the standard question ‘what you think are her weaknesses?’.
“Hmmm… that is a hard one (not really 🤣). She could be a little uptight with how things are arranged. She is quite fierce & strict if we do mess up the stationery cupboard for example.”
Then the caller delightly said, “That is exactly what we are looking for!” Aaahhh… of course… One’s weakness is another’s strength.
“Great!” Phew.
And she got the job 😁
