Recently I was counseling a colleague who is not on good terms with her new boss. Let’s call her Rachel.
Rachel’s boss was micro managing her and it was something she didn’t quite like. So she rebelled, giving her boss all sort of attitude. Not meeting daily KPIs, missing from her working desk, going on unplanned leave. This angered the boss & started to pick on her the smallest mistakes she made.
Who was she kidding really? That she could get away for being rebellious by not performing? My first thought was, so young, so childish & oh-so stupid.
First, regardless how crappy your boss is, at the end of the day, your work represents your own name. Nobody else’s. So the one who has the most to lose here, is you. Your very own reputation.
Second, from my many years in corporate, it’s never very smart to fight your boss (unless it’s an integrity issue which is entirely different story altogether). Even if you don’t like your boss, remember what Sun Tzu said, “Keep your friends close, your enemies closer.”
So be smart, and pick your battles wisely.
