Today, I had a very good lunch with an old friend. Well to be exact, he was an old client of mine. A fussy one too I remember when I serviced him 12 years ago back when I was in operations.
After he left the the company and no longer was my client, we continued to stay in touch on and off, but mostly about formal stuff around work and the occasional festive greetings.
Till today.
After knowing each other for more than a decade, we finally managed to sit down and chat like friends, friends. Same age as me, we talked a lot of about aging and how the older we get, our priorities had shifted to taking ourselves better more. Be it physical or mental. He educated me a lot about getting the sun to get the serotonin going especially when one is feeling depressive.
We also updated a lot of about our personal lives that we have missed for the past decade.
At one point of the conversation I was telling him about me signing up a dating app to recruit idea bouncers, also because I like to flirt. He then said, “It doesn’t sound like you.”
“Well, it’s because you never get to know this side of me. For so many years, we just talked about business.”
I continued, “I remember back in the days, we were very competitive. We were always competing who is the better manager sub-consciously, though we don’t say it. And honestly, I learnt a lot from you.”
He smiled in agreement as I gave him some specific examples how I learnt from him.
Because it’s true, the fussier clients we have, the more they will keep us on our toes. And good, fussy clients like him whom we can learn from and gives you business at the same time, are also hard to come by.
It was a very, very good lunch indeed.
