The goal is simple. Each team member takes turn to go up. You reach half point, you get half point. You reach the top, one point will be awarded to the team.
Lesson #1 Lead by Example
All of us in our group is new to this rock climbing thing. Half of us have fear of heights. Me? I have basophobia, which is the fear of falling (that is why in the video you can see I struggled coming down). I even had our Marshal pretend to fall so I can see how it looks like in case I fall.
I still remember when the Marshal asked, who wants to go first, we were all looking at each other. All takuts! That was when me and Angie, who are the senior leaders in the team, stepped up. Lead by example, right? Let us go first. And everybody else can watch and learn.
As leaders, we tell our people to be brave. So, we have to be brave first.
Lesson #2 Conquer our own fear
Honestly, all of us were scared. It’s 15-meter high, the walls! That is like almost 5-storey high! Scary-wei!
But in order to grow, facing our fears is part of the process too, right?
I once read an article that said you can never really run away from your fear. As long as we don’t face our fear, it will always be there haunting us. It does make sense, you know.
So we don’t run away from the wall and face it! So brave we all were, we all went up!
Lesson #3 Know who is the bravest & celebrate!
There was this one person in our team who has chronic acrophobia, which is the fear of heights. I remember she was almost tearing while telling us that she could not. I then told her, “It’s okay if you don’t want to go up. Don’t force yourself. We understand.”
But… she took a deep breath and went up! OMG! We all cheered for her so loud! Woohoooo!!!
She made it half way. Though she did not made it all the way to the top, for me, she was the bravest one among the all of us. Are you kidding me? With a chronic fear of heights and reaching 7+ meters high? That is like a grand achievement!
Just like how the revolutionary Nelson Mandela said, “The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers fear.”
You never know what your limits are till you test them. Fear, is temporary. Regret, is forever.
