There was this time, one of my staff asked me for a salary increment. He actually gave me a number and I asked, “With this increment, what more are you going to do for us?” He was paid market rate at that point of time. Hence, in order to earn more, he had to do more which for me, is fair.
We talked about it and I gave him a list of projects that he could stretch and take over to earn that increment. However, both of us were not sure if he could managed them. Then, we agreed on a “trial” period and in that period, we gave him an interim allowance.
Six months later, he delivered what was assigned to him and we decided to absorb the interim allowance into his basic salary.
So, all of you who are looking forward to a new career progression for your team but not too sure if they can make it or not, perhaps can try out this interim thing.
Because really… never try, we never know.
