I will tell you why it’s smart to write a short summary about yourself in your resume/CV.
Because most of the time, the first person who is reading your resume is a recruiter, not the hiring manager, be it from an agency or HR.
Now, a good recruiter will write a short summary about you when they forward your profile to the hiring manager and often they copy and paste from or at least refer to that summary of yours in your resume. Especially the ones from agencies.
So, in order to ease the recruiter in selling your profile correctly to the hiring manager, it’s always helpful if you can write a good summary that we, recruiters, can copy and paste.
In that executive summary, it will be read by someone who doesn’t know you personally. So, it needs to be something short and sweet but yet impactful and punchy even. You know, something like an elevator pitch.
Something like… “Almost 20 years of experience in the workforce solutions industry from operations to back support team. Currently, group head of HR, Admin, Service Ops & Marketing in an MNC with a team of 22 strong. Also currently appointed by MOHR as a panelist in IR Court representing employers. I also have a flair in public speaking.”
Those things like “I am hardworking”, “team player”, “willing to learn”, tak payah. Things you can google to copy and paste, leave it out. Write about what makes you “uniquely you” that can spark the hiring manager’s curiosity to want to interview you to find out more.
Also… when you get that executive summary right, it can also become a fantastic script prepared to be recited during the interview process when you are asked this question, “Tell me about yourself.”
You see, one stone two birds killed. Ampersand. So yes. I highly recommend you write one.
But in order to make it work, you need to write one that is not copied and pasted from some online template, if it makes sense.
