POV: Maternity Leave

Wef 1st January 2023, for all female employees working in West Malaysia & Labuan, the maternity leave now has increased from 60 to 98 consecutive days (consecutive days meaning inclusive of off days, rest days and public holidays. All other terms and conditions remained).

Like finally! We have been talking this about this for years and it finally happened!

Now, if your confinement started prior 1st January 2023, then your maternity leave maintains at 60 days. To be entitled to 98 days, your first day of confinement needs to start 1st January 2023 onwards. I know a mother who gave birth on 28th December 2022 – bummer! But I comforted her more importantly, the baby arrived healthy and that is a win already =)

Anyways, the other day I was interviewing a candidate and she asked me, “If I am planning to conceive this year, will it be a concern to your company?” I then asked her, “Well, do you plan to slack when you are pregnant or after you become a mother?”

“Of course, no!”

“Well, then we don’t have any concern at all.”

Because for me it’s simple. We hire on a long term basis. In comparison to the number of years we had planned for you stay with the company, 98 days is virtually nothing.
