Today, I want to share a memorable experience from my early days in the workforce – the first “constructive feedback” I received from my first boss at my very first job as a working adult. I was out on a sales visit with a senior colleague, engaging with a customer to explain our product. While my senior was explaining the features, a message popped up on my phone. Without much thought, I glanced at the message and replied on the spot, completely disregarding the importance of observing and learning from my senior’s interaction with the customer.
Upon returning to the office, my team leader approached me and addressed the issue at hand. He pointed out the significance of giving customers our undivided attention and refraining from using our phones when serving customers. At the time, I must admit, I wasn’t thrilled to receive that feedback. My immediate thought was that my senior had gone and snitched on me! However, looking back, I now recognise the invaluable lesson it taught me about respecting customers and valuing their time and attention.
Sometimes, the most impactful lessons come from unexpected sources and moments. It served as a reminder that constructive feedback, even if it initially stings, can be a catalyst for personal and professional growth.
Remember, every bit of feedback, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, has the potential to shape us into better professionals and individuals. Embrace those lessons, even if they come disguised as moments of discomfort, for they pave the way to success and continuous improvement.
