While it’s inevitable that there will be loose ends and unfinished work left behind when we leave a company, we do our best to minimize any potential disruptions. Hence, when it comes to handover, especially with a vast portfolio like mine, treating it as a project itself is crucial.
It all begins with a sit-down with my bosses, where we hash out the expectations and timelines, including a well-defined communication strategy. This helps establish clarity and ensures a smooth transition for everyone involved.
Next, I adopt a hands-on approach, demonstrating tasks and responsibilities to my colleagues. It’s like a show-and-tell session, where I share my methodology and insights gained from past experiences. And hey, I openly discuss my blunders I’ve made along the way, allowing my colleagues to learn from my mistakes and avoid similar pitfalls.
After the demonstration, I actively involve them in the process by assigning them tasks and closely observing their progress. This way I can provide guidance and correct any errors in real-time, enabling them to learn while I am still around.
Throughout the handover, I emphasize the importance of documentation and organizing critical information. This will help them to access necessary resources and reference materials easily, reducing any disruptions in the workflow.
Handover is not just about transferring tasks. It’s about transferring knowledge, experience, and empowering the team to excel. So yes, handover is not the end of the journey, but the beginning of a legacy. And let’s ensure it’s a legacy we can be proud of 😉
