The so-called “Constructive Feedback” or what I affectionately term as komen babi, is a delicate art that requires the right timing and approach. Here’s a step-by step guide to delivering feedback effectively.
Step 1: Choose the Right Time
Timing is everything. Avoid giving feedback when someone is in a highly emotional state. When they are exuberant, you are a kill joy. When they are sad, you are adding salt to injury. When they are angry, worse, you are adding oil to the fire.
The best time is when the person seems to be relatively upbeat. Find a good fengshui timing.
Step 2: Arrange a Casual Meeting
Invite the individual for a friendly lunch or coffee where you think they would enjoy. This creates a relaxed atmosphere for the conversation. Sometimes it’s hard to get angry when you are having good food 😉
Step 3: Break the Ice
Before diving into the feedback, engage in some small talk. Catch up on what’s happening in each other’s lives. This helps establish rapport and more importantly, comfort.
Step 4: Start with Compliments
Begin the conversation by highlighting the person’s strengths and accomplishments. This sets a positive tone and shows that you appreciate their efforts.
Step 5: Gradually Drop the Bomb
As you both enjoy your meal, gently transition into the “constructive feedback”. Use tactful language and express your observations “constructively”. Focus on specific behaviours or actions rather making it personal.
Step 6: Pause and Listen
After delivering the feedback, give the person space to react. Listen carefully to their response. Some may need time to digest this information.
Step 7: Always Respond with Empathy
Depending on their reaction, respond with empathy and understanding, offer support, clarify any misunderstandings, and explore potential solutions. Don’t be a karen yang asyik pandai complain and kutuk aje.
Remember, giving constructive feedback is about nurturing growth and improvement. Approach it with care and respect, and you’ll foster a positive environment for personal and professional development.
