Lessons from the Trenches

Underperformance is a term that often invokes fear, anxiety, and frustration. I’ve been there, on both sides of the table, and on both sides, it’s uncomfortable and downright painful.

When you consistently find yourself falling short, it can feel like the weight of the world was crushing you. Quitting might seem like the easiest way out, but then those bills won’t pay themselves, will they? I remember those days vividly, drowning in credit card debt due to my unchecked spending habits.

But here’s the thing about hitting rock bottom – it’s often the solid ground from which you can push off and soar higher. So, I toughed it out. Every time I went through these phases of underperformances, I survived. I embraced my mistakes. I didn’t just accept them, I also welcomed them because they were my stepping stones to growth.

It’s okay to fail. It’s okay to cry. In fact, it’s necessary.

In these moments of vulnerability that we find our strength. We learn, we adapt, and we move forward. We fail, we cry, we survive, and then we repeat it all over again.

In the world of workforce management, dealing with underperformance is not just about numbers, it’s about people. It’s about helping individuals recognise their potential, even when they stumble. It’s about giving them the tools and support.

So, if you find yourself in a cycle of underperformance, remember that it’s not the end. In fact, it’s a chance to begin anew. And if you’re managing underperformers, approach it not as a burden but as an opportunity to nurture growth and resilience.

Keep pushing, keep learning, and keep growing. We’ve got this!
