As an experienced recruiter, I’m often asked, “How long should someone stay with a company?” Well, the magic number used to be higher, at 5 years, but times have changed. In the past, long tenures were prized, as they indicated loyalty, stability, and a commitment to growth within a single organisation.
However, today’s job landscape is shifting.
With the rise of startups, the gig economy, and the rapid pace of technological change, careers often involve more fluidity. Career paths now frequently encompass diverse experiences across different companies. Staying for 3 years is now a sign of stability and adaptability. (Note: However, while the benchmark may have dropped to 3 years for some industries, it’s essential to remember that the magic number isn’t a strict rule. It’s a guideline.)
Within the span of 3 quality years, we can make a profound impact on a company. It’s not just a about testing waters; it’s a deep dive. During this time, we contribute significantly by taking on projects, overcoming challenges, and expanding our skill set. To be honest, anything less than 3 years usually doesn’t provide sufficient time to cultivate compelling narratives unless you’re exceptionally skilled at what you do.
So, when navigating your career, consider the magic number 3 and how it fits into your portfolio. While the landscape has evolved, demonstrating dedication and progress remains timeless.
