As of today I am writing this post…
Thaipusam is observed as a public holiday in other countries such as Sri Lanka and Mauritius, but not in Singapore.
Thaipusam in Malaysia is only recognised as a public holiday in the following states: Johor, Kedah, WP Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Perak, WP Putrajaya and Selangor.
Thaipusam is not a compulsory holiday, so companies can opt not to choose it as part of their min 11 gazetted public holidays, just like Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, and Christmas.
It does make me wonder how large the Hindu Tamil population needs to be for a state to recognise Thaipusam as a public holiday.
In an ideal world, everyone would have the opportunity to celebrate their significant cultural and religious festivals without the added burden of seeking special permission. Until then, the teachings of Thaipusam offer solace and strength. They inspire us to face challenges with grace and to find in them the opportunity for deeper spiritual connection and understanding.
Happy Thaipusam, everybody. May our society continue to be as beautifully diverse.
