The other day, my friend @Tammy sparked an interesting discussion about “Peternity Leave” especially for singles who don’t plan to have children but have pets instead. The idea is interesting, considering that pets are often treated like family members today. Think about it – if our pets give birth, don’t we, as their caregivers, need to be there for them just like any parent?
To be fair to employers and prevent misuse, here’s what I’m proposing:
- Eligibility would require proof of pet ownership, like registration documents. For example in Malaysia, you can obtain a pet passport (https://petpassport.dvs.gov.my/animalpassport_portal/index.php?r=column/cone&id=22).
- An official veterinary report confirming the pet gave birth is needed, just like birth certificates to support maternity/paternity leave.
- Peternity Leave capped at 3 days per year.
- Sharing a lovely photo of the new (furry) family is not mandatory, but it would certainly be encouraged!
I think this idea not only acknowledge the bond between humans and their pets but also promotes responsible pet ownership. It’s a small step toward recognising the evolving nature of family and care in our society.
What do you think of this pawsome idea? Yay or nay?
