This morning, I posted a video suggesting that a great question to ask during an interview is, “Why are you hiring for this role?” because this question can lead to further conversation. Some comments responded with, “But they always lie.”
That’s a fair point.
It’s true that some may not always provide the most transparent answers. Sometimes, it might feel like you’re not getting the full story. Interviewers might stick to safer, more polished answers, especially if they feel the truth is complicated or sensitive.
However, this doesn’t mean you should shy away from asking such question. It only means you should be observant and critical of the answers you receive.
Remember, an interview is as much as for you to assess the company as it is for them to assess you. Use their responses to gauge the company culture and their openness. Consider asking follow-up questions to probe deeper, such as, “Can you give me an example of a project I would be working on?” These questions can help you determine if their answers align with your expectations and whether they seem genuine.
Always listen not just to what is said, but also to how it is said. It’s always worthwhile to listen closely.
