Here are the common types of sexual harassment in the workplace:
1. Verbal Harassment. This is unwanted comments or jokes that are sexual in nature. This includes making inappropriate remarks about someone’s appearance, asking invasive questions, or spreading sexual rumours.
Example: A colleague repeatedly commented how “sexy” I look, even after I told him to stop.
2. Non-Verbal Harassment. This involves behaviours that are suggestive but do not involve words, such as making sexual gestures.
Example: A colleague repeatedly makes an inappropriate gesture by forming a circle with one hand and poking a finger through it, while winking suggestively at me, making me feel extremely uncomfortable.
3. Physical Harassment. This is any unwanted physical contact that is sexual in nature. This can range from inappropriate touching to more severe forms like sexual assault.
Example: A colleague keeps hugging me and rubbing my shoulders, even after I asked her to stop.
4. Visual Harassment. This is displaying or sharing inappropriate sexual images, videos or other content that creates an uncomfortable environment.
Example: A colleague has sexually explicit posters on her workstation or sends porn images to me.
5. Quid Pro Quo Harassment. “This for that” harassment, where a boss requests sexual favours in exchange for job benefits like promotions, increments, or continued employment.
Example: My boss hinted that I could get a promotion if I agree to go out on a date with him.
Sometimes, people may engage in behaviours without realising the impact it has on others. It’s important to understand that actions, whether verbal, non-verbal, physical, or visual, can make people uncomfortable and create an unsafe work environment.
By being more aware of our behaviour, we can help ensure that everyone feels respected and valued at work. Let’s be mindful and considerate, because what might seem harmless to one person could be harmful to another.
Everyone deserves to work in a respectful, safe environment.
