I’ve been fortunate not to face overt discrimination in my career due to my gender or age. But in my personal life? Oh, that’s a different story. I’ve been told I could have been a better mother if I hadn’t been so focused on my career – by other women, no less! Oh, the irony.
In Malaysia, women make up approximately 47% of the workforce, and the numbers in leadership are steadily improving. Recent data shows that 31.4% of board positions in the top 100 public-listed companies are now held by women, a big jump from 16.6% in 2016. Additionally, 40% of senior management roles in Malaysia are held by women, reflecting steady progress over the past two years.
However, challenges persist. Women hold only 6.2% of board chair positions in Malaysia, highlighting the need for continued efforts to promote gender equality in leadership roles with better pay.
Happy International Women’s Day! 🫶 May we accelerate our action to support one another – men supporting women and women supporting women… without side-eying each other for life choices. 😉
