“Aunty, my boss said if I don’t do proper handover, they can tahan my last salary. Can ah like that?”
Short answer: Cannot.
As per Employment Act 1955, employers must pay your salary, including your final wages, no later than the 7th of the following month. They cannot hold your salary just because you didn’t do your handover properly.
But let’s be honest for a second.
Just because they can’t hold our salary, doesn’t mean we should skip our responsibilities. We’re not leaving a party. We’re leaving a role that someone else has to inherit after us.
So do it right. Don’t be a pot calling the kettle black. Do it for the next poor soul taking over our mess
From the moment we tender our resignation, start planning our handover properly. Because at the end of the day, it’s our reputation that walks out the door with us.
Don’t burn bridges.
