POV: Notice Periods

Let’s be honest. Once someone tenders their resignation, not everyone is still “mentally” at work.

From my 20 years of experience in HR & Operations, standardising notice period to 3 months across the board doesn’t always make sense.

Here’s what I believe works better:

🔹 Sales Roles – 1 month is enough.
Most salespeople stop pushing for sales once they’ve decided to resign. So let’s not drag it. Just wrap up the leads, handover the customers, and let them go.

🔹 Functional Roles (HR, Finance, IT, etc.) – 2 months is fair.
One month to find replacement, one month to do a proper handover. Fair and practical.

🔹 Managerial Roles – 3 months perhaps.
Leaders manage strategy, projects, and team morale. And often with no clear successor. The extra time helps with transition and continuity.

Be strategic, not rigid. If the exit doesn’t impact much, holding someone back for 3 months “just because” wastes times on both sides.

Now, I’m curious… How long is the notice period in your current/last job? Vote below 👇
